Nighttime Nanny?

I just read an interesting article in the New York Times. Click here to read. Can you imagine having a stranger come into your home to care for your newborn during the middle of the night? Why would you even have children if you can’t care for them. Especially if they’re already in day care all day? This is absolutely crazy to me.

On Writing

I haven’t written much since I dropped out of grad school over a year and a half ago, though I think about it often. My biggest problem with getting an MFA in nonfiction was 1) having a huge student loan to repay; 2) the difficulty in finding a decent job to repay the student loan; 3) the issue of wanting to have children and stay home, anyway; but mostly 4) the issue of sitting in an empty room in order to write something profound enough to get published. I just couldn’t imagine holing myself up in order to write a decent piece, you know? I’m a people person after all. What’s been forming in my mind lately though is that, yes, I still love to write. Time is an issue. But also, I love to sing. I do neither. So why not write songs? And why not learn to play the guitar so that I can play AND sing these songs that I’m thinking about writing?

I’ve been thinking a lot about spiritual gifts and how we should use what God has given us to glorify him. I’ve just recently written on my bathroom mirror: “Seize the day! Glorify your Maker!” I’ve always wanted my home to be a place of worship and singing. I dream of writing songs that my kids will remember as “family songs”, ones that were special to us because we sang them before bed or when we woke up in the morning…or before dinner, or after dinner. You get the idea. A good friend of ours is coming for a visit soon and I’m hoping he can re-string our funny, old guitar and show me a few things so I can finally get started on this little dream of mine. Not for my glory, no way. So that within the confines of our home we can worship creatively and freely, making music to the Lord from the depths of our soul.
