Following Benny around the house today. Man, diapers sure are easier.
Here’s my tool kit:
Washrags
Towels
Baking soda/water solution
New undies
Timer
Here’s my plan, now that Benny has proven he can poo in the potty and pee on command:
Put Benny on the potty every thirty minutes when the timer goes off to pee.
When he has an accident, he helps me clean it up completely.
Don’t leave the house unless I’m feeling very, very brave ( and have prayed for mucho patience and am prepared to extend grace when there’s an accident).
If leaving the house, bring toolkit (especially if going to someone’s house) and fresh clothes.
Only use a diaper at nap and bed time – no matter what.
Be ALL IN! IN IT TO WIN IT! GO TEAM! POTTY TRAINED OR BUST! (Repeat these and other encouraging mantras all day, as necessary.)
Do the “pee pee in the potty” dance every time he does it successfully. (Thanks Shannon for this tip!)
Pray, pray, pray…and make potty training fun!
Do you have any other tips for me?

Have you checked his diaper right when he wakes up from bed/naps? Is it wet or dry? When I started potty training, they both of my girls were waking up dry. I never put them in diapers at nap time or bed time and I’ve never had bed wetting issues. During those weeks though, I’d have to get up with them when they woke at 4:30-5am and take them potty though. I’ve heard boys are WAY different than girls though. We’ll see how that goes in a few months with Pike.

Looks like you are totally ready. Boys are a lot harder than girls (thats been my experience) but I did give them a small treat each time they went potty. Then the treats disappear and it becomes a regular thing.
Love the point about having patience to handle an accident. There will be accidents. Be ready and be encouraging. What a BIG boy!
Also try the aim at cheerios trick for him- helps keep their pee in the toilet.

you sound so much more mentally prepared than i. Jenna is a little older than Benny but can’t tell when she needs to poop (thinks toots are poops). i am not determined/patient enough to deal with MULTIPLE poopy underwear messes therefore, i have given up and will try again another day. i have a Poo Poo Potty (My Little) Pony she can have if/when she succeeds that i will confiscate if i feel that it’s more than a typical toddler accident.
i’m trying to 1) NOT feel guilty for having a 2.5 year old girl that still wears diapers and 2) NOT lose my patience with her… she’s a little girl and she’s not messing her pants to make me upset (is she?).
i figure, there’s a little change happening at our house and maybe it can wait… a month or two, no more. she WILL be potty trained before “Quintus” arrives. i’m not going to have 3 in diapers… again *shiver*.
ps… vinegar/water solution also neutralizes the smell and disinfects if it gets on the carpet.
